Enhancing Cross Border Security and Counter Terrorism Coordination between Uganda and Kenya

Current Project

Enhancing Cross Border Security and Counter Terrorism Coordination between Uganda and Kenya

This is a study assessment aimed to better understand the security needs and challenges of security actors and cross-border communities at the Kenya-Uganda border. It focuses on security challenges affecting a southern segment of the border along Uganda’s Mayuge, Namayingo, Bugiri, and Busia Districts and Kenya’s Busia, Siaya, and Homa Bay Counties. A better understanding of border security needs and challenges will therefore inform future Government of Uganda Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) and its stakeholders, United Religions Initiative (URI) Great Lakes, Champions of Peace Kenya,  United States Institute of Peace (USIP) and United States Government programming that will seek to increase communication, cooperation, and coordination between the various security actors and cross-border communities in order for them to work together to address security-related challenges to reduce the growing risks of terrorism and justice-related drivers of violent extremism along the border.

We are therefore conducting this study on the Ugandan side whereas Champions of Peace (CoP) Kenya is doing so on the Kenyan side. This is being done in partnership with United States Institute of Peace.  We anticipate that this will be very helpful in enhancing cross border security and community resilience in the wake of Violent Extremism (VE) activities for both countries along the border districts.
