Building Tolerance in Education Systems in Uganda Project
This is a study project aimed to facilitate greater understanding of Uganda’s Islamic education system—including structures, strengths, and needs of Uganda’s formal and informal madrasas—on the part of Ugandan Muslim, educational, and government stakeholders as well as international stakeholders; and to provide knowledge and recommendations to inform subsequent initiatives to enhance the capacity of madrasa education, such as expanding educational resources and teacher training opportunities. The study which kick started in 2021, managed to surveyed 1626 madrasas across Uganda including formal and informal, primary and secondary, and other madrasas, aimed to facilitate greater understanding of the structures, strengths, and needs of these schools and to inform future educational enhancement initiatives. We are conducting this entire project in partnership with the International Center for Religion and Diplomacy (ICRD) with support from the United States Department of State. The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) & the Kibuli Office of the Supreme Mufti (KOSM) have also collaborated with us since the inception stage right from the research design and have been very instrumental in providing access to madrasas and encouraging them madrasas to participate in the study.
This project is aimed at building assertive, inclusive and equitable democratic societies using sugarcane production as the launching pad in the 6 districts of Bugiri, Kaliro, Mayuge, Iganga, Jinja and Kamuli in Eastern Uganda.
