What we do

URI-Great lakes make an impact in different areas of focus

Peace Building

Peace building through dialogue is a central component in all the work what we do with our member organization. our programs put a lot of emphasis on conflict resolution, mediation, and reconciliation

Interfaith Cooperation

At URI we promote interfaith cooperation to enhance peace through the promotion of co-existence through our interconnected networks both locally through CCs and globally through the global membership

Human Rights and Justice Programs

Human rights are inherent. The respect for human rights continues to be a challenge at all levels. This starts from our homes, community, places of work to national and international levels. Our different spiritual teachings call for fairness and respect for humanity.

Environmental protection

Extensive agricultural activities with a high degree of poor farming methods, tree-felling, charcoal burning and brick making are some of the causes for increasing poor environmental conditions in the region.

Youth Empowerment

URI-GL is focused on strategies that cultivate and train a new generation of compassionate and effective leaders who value and use the diversity of their faith, cultural and indigenous traditions to address issues in their communities, regions, and the world over.  Our Young Leaders Program is designed to build youth leadership, increased civic participation, interfaith action and community service among others.

Regional Advocacy programs

Our Peace building efforts mainly focus on Preventing Violent Extremism, Religious Fundamentalism and Electoral Violence which have become a serious regional threat. Other grassroots issues addressed through our programs include land conflicts, and community-based conflicts.  All our programs use an interfaith strategy through dialogue and mediation approaches.

Our programs/projects are focused on our primary thematic areas of impact that help people achieve a culture of peace, enhance the members' participation, promote engagement, reconciliation and healing among the different communities at the grassroots, interconnected with national, regional, cross-regional, and global level efforts.

Story of Impact

Muslims and Christians are the two dominant religions in Goma. But, if we notice peaceful cohabitation, they do not agree when it comes to the Gospel and the Quran. The Bible and the Quran argument story come once again to confirm these allegations. So during public preaching delivered by a pastor as it’s a common scene in Congo, people were gathered in big numbers in circular form to listen to the pastor. Books among them bibles, a Quran, and other stuff were displayed on the ground and used as didactic materials by the evangelist.

Story of Impact

Cultural issues are pretty high in my country (South Sudan), and in one incident, a man from the Madi tribe accidentally killed another man from the Acholi tribe causing a row between the two tribes. When the matter was reported to the police, the family of the deceased refused the case to be handled by the police rather preferred to settle the matter traditionally.

Story of Impact

While in preparations for my presentation about the Judaist experience in my country, Uganda, the Twin towers in New york which happened to be the venue of my presentation were blown up just in a flash, in what appeared to be religiously motivated terrorism
